FDK students began practicing the skill of underhand throwing by playing the game, Wishing Wells. The goal was to stand on a spot and underhand toss a bean bag (coin) so it would land inside a hula hoop (wishing well). Cues we tried to remember were: face target, bring arm back, step with the opposite foot and let go of the bean bag at a medium level.
FDK students practiced cooperation as they tried to complete the following tasks: Rock, Paper, Scissors Tag; partner planks, partner soccer; partner rolls; the washing machine; over and under and aerobic bowling. Students in the classes of Mrs. Zibell, Dr. Delli, Mrs. Clay, Miss Spurrier, Mrs. Binder and Ms. Mastores rocked and rolled their way to songs of the 50's today. Following the sock hop, root beer floats were enjoyed by all. Kindergarten students celebrated the 50th day of school by participating in activities students in the 1950's enjoyed. The 50's celebration ends with a sock hop and root beer floats next week! FDK students used scooters to practice team building skills while accomplishing tasks such as "Spider," "Centipede," and "Carousel." FDK students are using the skill of underhand rolling and applying the concepts of offense and defense in game play. They've learned that offense is when you are trying to score and defense is when you are trying to stop someone from scoring. We are beginning to identify strategies one can use when playing offense and/or defense in games. In the first game, Bowling Blitz, two students begin in the middle circle as rollers (offense), The rest of the class is guarding (defense) a bowling pin. The goal of the rollers is to knock down pins. If a student's pin is knocked down, they change roles and become a roller. As the number of rollers increase, it becomes harder to guard your pin. Students suggested the following strategies for the guards: choose a spot as far away from the rollers as you can; keep your hands in front of your pin so you don't knock it down; always watch the rollers. In the second game, King's Castle, students begin in one of two roles: roller (offense) or guard (defense). Bowling pins represent the kings and hula hoops are the castles. The castle guards try to stop balls from hitting their kings, while staying outside of the castle. The rollers attempt to roll a ball and knock down a king. If they're successful, they become the castle guard for that pin and the former guard becomes a roller. Full day kindergarten students learned three pathways (straight, curved and zig-zag) to use in movement and games. They are shown here playing Pac Man on scooters. Students must use the pathways marked on the gym floor, like roads, to travel. Four students serve as taggers, trying to tag those on blue scooters.
